Eurasian Milfoil Volunteers Needed
July 4, 2023
Hi all,
Lake Steward reporting here.
We have a very serious Eurasian Milfoil invasive species issue on the Lake, as communicated with MPOA in several stand alone eblasts and/or our quarterly eNewsletters since last Fall. This weed grows extremely fast and will have irreversible impacts to the health of the Lake in addition to reducing property values up to 20% if not managed (see image appended detailing why it’s an issue).
We NEED your help. Our Board is facing a high vacancy issue already and I can’t tackle this matter with only 1-2 people helping me and being located 3.5hrs from the Lake.
Volunteer Roles include:
1) Identifying patches in the North basin (refer to pictured MVCA instructions to identify Eurasian Milfoil). In the south, we know Eurasian Milfoil is generally growing in water 30 ft or less with varying degrees of severity
2) Installing the small amount of Board purchased Transport Canada approved markers (30 in total) to delineate large patches and reduce water traffic in some of the main known mature colonies. As all forms of traffic spreads the weed by creating small cuttings which colonies in days.
3) Offer to install and/or pay for more water markers detailed above to reduce or stop traffic at known weed beds.
4) Remove the weeds by hand, where feasible, by strictly following the pictured MVCA guidelines
5) Help identify sources of funding as the cost to manage this issue is extraordinary and will be ongoing
6) Offer to install and/or pay for pictured signage around all boat launches or points of entry
7) Email the Board to express support to spend money on this matter! As our Board’s mandate is to protect the health of the Lake.
Please contact communications@lakemazinaw.ca or mazlakesteward@gmail.com if you can help with any of the above roles.
